
George Provopoulos (20.04.1950 – 05.2024)George Provopoulos was born on April 20, 1950, in Piraeus. He graduated from the Department of Economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)and continued his studies on a state scholarship in the United Kingdom, where he earned a PhD from the University of Essex. He served as Deputy Governor and Governor ofthe Bank of Greece and as Chairman of the Council of Economic Experts.
He was also an Economic Advisor to Alpha Bank, Chairman and CEO of Commercial Bank of Greece, and later Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Piraeus Bank. He served as Vice President of the Hellenic Bank Association, a member of the Monetary Committee of the European Union, Alternate Executive Director at the IMF representing Greece, a board member of TITAN Cement Company, General Director of IOBE (Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research), and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ELLAKTOR Group. He worked as a professor at the Department of Economics of NKUA. He was the Chairman of the Board of Eurobank Bulgaria (Postbank) and the Chairman of the Scientific Committee from December 17, 2018, until his passing in May 2024.
