Mr. Athanasios Papaioannou is President, as well as former General Secretary of the Greek Parliament. He was born in Piraeus in 1964. He graduated from the Law School of Athens and holds a Master’s Degree (LL.M.) and a Doctorate (S.J.D.) in Commercial and Labor Law from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (USA). He has been a lawyer in Athens since 1990 (suspended from 2016) and has worked for a number of years as a research associate (and then as a scientific coordinator) in the Economic and Social Committee of Greece. From October 2009 until March 2015, he was the Secretary General of the Parliament. In July 2016 he took over as Vice President of ASEP and remained in office until June 2021, when he was appointed President of ASEP. At the same time, he is the author of eight books and dozens of articles in Greek and American legal journals, dealing mainly with labor law and human rights issues, but also with the legal and political systems of the United States and the United Kingdom. Finally, he has taught “Labor Law” at the School of Officers of the Greek Police and “European Law” at the TEI of Athens, as well as “Introduction to the Greek Administrative System” at the Hellenic Open University.
